How does reverse osmosis work?
Water is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to block dissolved solids. Clean water collects in a small storage tank; the rejected minerals go down the drain. A typical system stages sediment and carbon prefilters, then the membrane, then a final polish filter before the dedicated faucet.
Is RO worth it if I already have a softener?
For drinking and cooking, usually yes. Softening exchanges hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium — it does not reduce total dissolved solids, and it does not improve taste much. RO addresses exactly that. It is also what most people notice in coffee, tea, and ice.
How often do the filters need changing?
- Sediment and carbon prefilters: every 6–12 months
- RO membrane: every 2–4 years, shorter on very hard feed water
- Polish filter: annually
Slow flow at the faucet, a return of taste, or a tank that never fills usually means a filter or membrane is due, or that tank pressure has dropped.
Can you run it to the refrigerator?
Often yes, if the distance and pressure allow. We check the run length and whether a permeate pump is needed. Long runs to a distant refrigerator can starve the ice maker without one.

What does reverse osmosis remove that a softener doesn't?
A softener trades calcium and magnesium for sodium. Total dissolved solids stay roughly the same, which is why softened water can still taste flat or mineral-heavy. Reverse osmosis physically separates dissolved solids from the water, so it addresses taste, odor, and mineral content that softening leaves untouched.
In practice, people notice the difference first in coffee and tea, then in ice, then in plain drinking water. If you have been buying bottled water while running a softener, RO is usually what you actually wanted.
Why is my RO water slow or my tank empty?
Three causes cover almost every call:
- Clogged prefilters. Sediment and carbon stages load up first. If it has been more than a year, start here.
- Low tank pressure. The storage tank has an air bladder that needs roughly 7–8 psi when empty. If it has lost charge, the tank fills but will not push water out.
- A spent membrane. Membranes last two to four years on valley water, less if the prefilters were neglected. Taste returning is the usual tell.
Low incoming pressure can also starve the system. Homes at higher elevations on the west side sometimes need a permeate pump to get normal output.
Does RO waste water?
Yes, some. A standard system sends several gallons to the drain for every gallon it produces, which matters in a desert valley under long-term conservation rules. Newer high-efficiency membranes and permeate pumps cut that ratio substantially, and we will tell you the real number for the system being quoted rather than glossing over it.
Where does the system go?
Under the kitchen sink is standard, with a dedicated faucet drilled through the counter or set into an existing sprayer hole. We plan for filter access — you need room to unscrew housings and pull the tank — because a system crammed against the back wall becomes a service problem every year.
Can it feed the refrigerator and ice maker?
Often, if the run is reasonably short and pressure allows. Long tubing runs to a distant refrigerator can starve an ice maker; a permeate pump or a larger membrane usually solves it. We check the distance before promising it.
